Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian, Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the growing influence of social media popularity in Nigeria's movie industry.
The respected actor maintained that while social media fame may help actors gain visibility and attract audiences, it can never take the place of genuine talent, skill, and professionalism.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Selah Meditate Podcast, Owoh dismissed concerns that talented actors are being sidelined by filmmakers who prioritize social media influencers and celebrities with large online followings.
According to him, true talent remains the foundation of a successful acting career and cannot be permanently overshadowed by internet popularity.
“I don’t think social media fame is replacing real talent. It can’t. There is no way social media fame can replace real talent,” the veteran actor stated.
His comments come amid increasing concerns within Nollywood over casting decisions that some industry professionals believe are being influenced more by online popularity than acting ability.
