Babcock University has distanced itself from a certificate circulating on social media and allegedly linked to Nigerian comedian and content creator Carter Efe, describing the document as fake and warning that those responsible could face legal consequences.
The institution, in a public statement released on Monday, dismissed the purported "Honorary Certificate" allegedly issued to Oderohiwo Joseph Efe, popularly known as Carter Efe, which claimed he had been awarded a "First Class Upper."
According to the university, the document did not originate from Babcock University and bears no resemblance to its official academic records or award procedures.
The institution further clarified that it does not issue honorary certificates for undergraduate academic performance, stressing that honorary awards are distinct from degree classifications. It also noted that there is no academic classification known as "First Class Upper" in its grading system.
"The highest academic classification awarded by Babcock University is First Class Honours," the university stated, urging members of the public to disregard the circulating certificate.
The university advised employers, educational institutions and other stakeholders to verify academic qualifications through its Office of the Registrar to avoid being misled by fraudulent documents.
Babcock University also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of its academic credentials, warning that it would pursue appropriate legal and criminal action against any individual or group found forging its certificates or unlawfully using the institution's name.
The clarification comes after the alleged certificate gained widespread attention on social media, with many users questioning its authenticity due to the unusual "First Class Upper" designation.
As of the time of filing this report, Carter Efe had not publicly responded to the university's statement or addressed the controversy surrounding the viral certificate.
