Popular Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has sparked reactions on social media following a heated exchange with a critic over comments he made about the current state of the country.
The singer had earlier taken to his official social media page to express concern about growing hardship and injustice in Nigeria, admitting that entertainers, including himself, have not done enough to speak up on issues affecting citizens.
“I can’t lie, we entertainers… we dey fuck up, I won’t lie, including me. We need to speak up. It’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go,” Davido wrote.
His statement quickly generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians supporting his comments while others questioned his sincerity and political stance.
A social media user identified as Princess Luna strongly criticised the singer, accusing him of being pretentious and allegedly connected to supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Na God go punish you and your family. Go and do that performative rubbish in your City Boys group chat and get out of my face with all this pretentious nonsense. Na foolish Nigerians I blame,” the user wrote.
Reacting to the criticism, Davido denied belonging to any political group and defended his record of publicly speaking against government failures.
“I no dey part of any City Boy group. When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me,” the singer responded.
Davido also clarified that although he maintains a friendship with “ST,” the relationship does not influence his opinions about national issues.
“I’ve been friends with ST for years and that’s where it stops, and I call and complain to him all the time, even in person,” he added.
The singer concluded his response with a strongly worded remark directed at the critic, saying, “God punish your generation.”
The exchange has since gone viral across social media platforms, reigniting conversations about the role of celebrities in speaking against hardship, insecurity, and governance issues in Nigeria.
Davido has in the past publicly commented on national matters, particularly during periods of political tension and economic hardship, often drawing both praise and criticism from fans and political observers.
