Ajara Lasisi, the Nigerian actress widely known as Aunty Ajara in the Yoruba film industry, has passed away following a prolonged illness.
She reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday, with the sad development confirmed by her family.
The announcement was made by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, in an emotional video message in which he expressed the family’s appreciation to colleagues, fans, and well-wishers for their support during her illness.
“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.
Ridwan thanked members of the film industry and the general public for their prayers and financial assistance while appealing that further donations for her medical treatment should be discontinued.
“All the families, we are using this period to appreciate you all. We appreciate the president and all industry members. We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again,” he added.
The actress’ health challenges became publicly known last week after fellow actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke made an appeal for financial support, revealing that Lasisi was in critical condition and dependent on an oxygen machine. Despite receiving medical attention and financial help, her condition reportedly worsened.
Aunty Ajara was admired for her strong screen presence and was particularly celebrated for her maternal and culturally rich roles in Yoruba films. Over the years, she featured in several notable productions, including Gingerrr, Queen Lateefah, and Isiti, earning respect within the industry and among movie lovers.
In 2025, the actress opened up about a deeply personal tragedy, sharing that she had previously lost a child — a revelation that drew sympathy from fans and colleagues.
Her death has since sparked an outpouring of tributes from the entertainment community, as many remember her contributions to the growth of the Yoruba movie industry.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
