The Lagos State Government has unveiled a detailed traffic diversion plan ahead of the 2026 Lagos City Marathon scheduled for Saturday, February 14. The move is aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and safeguarding residents during the highly anticipated sporting event.
The traffic plan, released by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, covers both the 42-kilometre and 10-kilometre races, which will take place simultaneously along designated routes across the state. Authorities noted that the arrangements are part of broader efforts to maintain order and prevent congestion during the marathon.
According to the ministry, the 42-kilometre race will begin at Ahmadu Bello Way near the MRS Gas Station and continue through the entire Coastal Road, which will also serve as the finishing point for participants.
Meanwhile, the 10-kilometre race will start from Durosimi Etti Street in Lekki Phase 1. Runners will move through Ozumba Mbadiwe, Bishop Oluwole Street, Akin Adesola Street, and end the race at Sanusi Fafunwa Street.
The government disclosed that all adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections linked to the race routes will be temporarily closed from 12:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event. However, officials stated that some roads may be reopened intermittently as the race progresses to ease movement.
To enforce the traffic arrangement, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other security agencies will be stationed across affected areas to restrict access and maintain order throughout the marathon.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured residents that adequate personnel would be on the ground to assist motorists. He advised Lagosians to plan their journeys ahead, use alternative routes where necessary, and consider other modes of transportation to reduce inconvenience.
The ministry urged motorists to remain patient, explaining that the temporary restrictions are part of preparations for the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. The state government also appealed for public cooperation, emphasizing that the measures are necessary to guarantee the safety of participants and ensure a successful event.
