President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sympathy with traders and residents affected by the devastating fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano, describing the incident as deeply concerning and ordering a comprehensive investigation into the recurring disasters.
The fire reportedly began on Saturday evening and continued into the early hours of Sunday, destroying large sections of the popular food market. Goods worth millions of naira were lost in the inferno, leaving many traders devastated and uncertain about how to rebuild their businesses.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President characterised the incident as tragic and acknowledged the severe impact on the livelihoods of hardworking Nigerians who depend on the market for survival.
Tinubu disclosed that he had contacted Abba Kabir Yusuf to obtain a firsthand assessment of the situation and the extent of the damage.
“This tragic incident is deeply concerning, especially coming less than two weeks after another fire outbreak at the same market. My thoughts are with the affected traders and their families,” the President said.
He directed relevant authorities to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the repeated fire outbreaks, emphasising the need for urgent preventive measures.
“The recurring market fires that leave our hardworking traders in despair must be addressed decisively. I have ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the causes and recommend lasting solutions,” Tinubu added.
The President further reassured victims of the disaster that the Federal Government stands with them, pledging support as recovery efforts begin. Authorities are expected to work with emergency responders and local officials to assess the losses and implement stronger safety mechanisms aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
