President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to embark on a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to 19, 2026, following a formal invitation from King Charles III.
The announcement was made on Sunday via a statement shared on the British royal family’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. According to the statement, President Tinubu will be ceremonially received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle. The Nigerian leader will be accompanied by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Reacting to the development, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the upcoming trip as historic. He noted that it would mark the first state visit by a Nigerian head of state to the United Kingdom in 37 years. The last such visit occurred in 1989, when former military president Ibrahim Babangida was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
State visits are considered one of the United Kingdom’s most significant diplomatic tools, combining royal ceremony with high-level political engagement to reinforce relationships with key international partners. Analysts believe the visit could further strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between Nigeria and the UK.
President Tinubu and King Charles III, who both assumed office in May 2023, have maintained a cordial relationship and have met on multiple occasions. Their first meeting took place in November 2023 in Dubai during the COP28 climate summit. They later met again in September 2024 at Buckingham Palace.
King Charles has longstanding connections with Nigeria, having visited the country four times before ascending the throne. Over the years, he has expressed admiration for Nigerian culture, often referencing his interest in Pidgin English and the global rise of Afrobeats.
In a further demonstration of these ties, the King’s Trust International expanded its footprint into Nigeria in 2023. The initiative focuses on addressing youth unemployment while supporting entrepreneurship and enterprise development across the country.
The forthcoming visit is expected to open new avenues for cooperation and deepen bilateral relations between both nations, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, climate action, and youth empowerment.
