The incident, which reportedly occurred overnight, sparked unrest between some members of the Yoruba and Hausa communities, prompting the swift deployment of security personnel to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader communal crisis.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim, identified as a tricycle mechanic of Yoruba origin, was allegedly stabbed to death during an altercation involving individuals believed to be Hausa scrap collectors.
Residents alleged that one of the suspects pulled a sharp object from a sack containing scrap materials before chasing a group of people and fatally stabbing the mechanic. However, these claims have not been independently verified, and authorities have yet to confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The alleged killing triggered outrage among residents, with some angry youths reportedly setting properties ablaze and confronting members of the Hausa community within the neighbourhood. The unrest created panic across parts of Ojoo, forcing many residents and business owners to flee for safety.
Witnesses also claimed that several Northerners living in the area went into hiding as tensions intensified, while groups of Yoruba youths demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the mechanic's death.
In response to the unrest, operatives of the Oyo State joint security outfit, Operation Burst, alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, were deployed to the area. The security presence helped restore a measure of calm, with patrol teams maintaining surveillance to prevent further violence.
Security authorities appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid reprisals, and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation. They assured the public that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The latest incident has reignited concerns over ethnic tensions in parts of Ibadan. Similar communal disturbances have occurred in the past, including a clash in July 2022 in Ibadan South West Local Government Area involving members of the Hausa and Yoruba communities. During that incident, lottery kiosk operator Mufutau Sanni was attacked while attempting to intervene in a fight between a Hausa trader and a Yoruba man. Although early reports suggested a fatality, the Oyo State Police Command later clarified that no life was lost.
As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the latest violence in Ojoo. Security operatives, however, remain on the ground, conducting patrols and monitoring the situation to ensure law and order are maintained.
Residents have urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly by identifying those responsible for the alleged killing while strengthening measures to prevent further breakdown of peace in the community.
