Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State chapter, on Tuesday blocked access to the Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan in protest over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The protest, which took place on June 2, 2026, caused disruption around the state secretariat as union members demanded urgent action from the government and security agencies to secure the safe release of the abducted victims.
The demonstrators expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in parts of the state, particularly attacks targeting schools, pupils and teachers.
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the teachers called on authorities to intensify rescue operations and strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities.
The protest comes amid growing public outrage over the continued captivity of the abducted pupils and teachers, who were reportedly kidnapped during attacks by armed men on schools and surrounding communities in Oriire Local Government Area.
Residents, parents and civil society groups have continued to mount pressure on the government to ensure the safe return of the victims and prevent further attacks on educational institutions.
As of the time of filing this report, leaders of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State chapter, had not spoken to journalists regarding the protest or issued an official statement.
