Court Jails Two Men 15 Years for Killing 12-Year-Old Housemaid in Lagos

Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Thursday sentenced two men to 15 years’ imprisonment each for the death of a 12-year-old housemaid they brutally flogged.

The convicts, Edidiong Edem, a 22-year-old painter, and Alex Effiong-Etim, a 21-year-old mechanic, were convicted and sentenced by Justice Abiola Soladoye after entering a plea bargain on an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Delivering judgment, Justice Soladoye found the duo guilty and ruled that each of them should serve 15 years in prison. The judge also ordered that the sentence should take effect from the date the convicts were first remanded in custody.

The court heard that the two men flogged the young girl with a broom, an assault that ultimately resulted in her death.

Edem and Effiong-Etim were initially arraigned before the court on February 25, 2022, where they pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, they later entered into a plea bargain agreement dated February 25, leading to the amended charge of involuntary manslaughter.

During the proceedings, the prosecution, led by state counsel Oluwaseun Adewoye, told the court that the incident occurred in January 2022 at Military Estate in the Eleko area of Lagos State.

According to the prosecution, the convicts recklessly flogged the young girl on her legs with a broom, inflicting injuries that later became infected with tetanus, which eventually led to her death.

The prosecution added that the offence contravened Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
