The Nigeria Police Force in Bauchi has arrested a man identified as Mohammed Lawan for allegedly confining his biological son in chains for about 17 years in Shadawanka village, located within Bauchi Local Government Area.
The victim, Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, was rescued after a concerned resident alerted authorities to his distressing condition.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, said a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division carried out a swift operation at the residence where the victim was reportedly held.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Babangida in a severely emaciated state and immediately secured his release. He was subsequently rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment and rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations commence.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed the Divisional Police Officer to conduct a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He further ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive probe into the alleged prolonged abuse.
Police authorities assured the public that more information would be provided as the investigation progresses.
