The holy month of Ramadan 1447AH has officially begun following the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening.
The confirmation was made by the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, which declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of the sacred fasting period observed by Muslims worldwide.
The announcement came after verified observations from astronomical centres in Hawtat Sudair and Tumair. With the sighting confirmed, millions of faithful across the Kingdom and beyond are set to commence the month-long period dedicated to spiritual reflection, increased prayers, charity, and self-discipline.
Despite the declaration in Saudi Arabia, Muslims in Nigeria are awaiting an official announcement from the Sultanate Council of Sokoto, led by Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. The council traditionally confirms the start of Ramadan after verified local moon sightings or in alignment with credible global reports.
In a goodwill message, authorities at Masjid al-Haram and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi prayed for acceptance of believers’ acts of worship throughout the holy month.
“May Allāh accept our acts of worship and grant us the ability to utilize the precious moments of this Blessed month to engage in that which pleases Him. Aameen,” the Haramain statement read.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims through daily fasting from dawn to sunset, alongside heightened devotion and humanitarian acts.
