The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced a 12-hour restriction of movement across Abuja ahead of the February 21 Area Councils’ elections.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, movement will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day to ensure a smooth and secure voting process.
The restriction applies to all residents within the Federal Capital Territory, except essential service providers and individuals officially accredited to participate in the electoral exercise.
Adeh disclosed that extensive security deployments have been carried out across the territory to maintain law and order before, during, and after the elections.
The operation, she said, is a joint effort involving multiple security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others.
She further quoted the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, as directing officers deployed for election duty to exhibit professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights.
“He also advised officers to remain vigilant, impartial, and courteous in the discharge of their duties, while respecting the rights of all citizens,” Adeh stated.
The Commissioner appealed to residents of the FCT to cooperate with security personnel and adhere strictly to the operational guidelines put in place for the election.
He assured voters that adequate security arrangements have been made to guarantee a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process, encouraging eligible voters to turn out without fear.
