Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde held separate closed-door meetings with ex-military president Ibrahim Babangida on Tuesday at his residence in Minna, Niger State.
Abubakar met with Babangida shortly after 1 p.m., while Makinde joined later at about 2:10 p.m. Both politicians engaged in private discussions with the elder statesman, though the details of the meetings were not made public.
Speaking to journalists afterward, Abubakar said his discussions focused on strengthening the African Democratic Congress (ADC) structures in Niger State and were unrelated to the 2027 presidential election.
“I am a member of ADC, and we are busy making sure our structures are firmly rooted from ward to local, state, and national levels,” he stated. “We are mobilising people and registering voters at the same time. The issue of contesting in the 2027 election did not arise.”
Abubakar also urged opposition parties to unite in rejecting the Senate’s preference for manual transmission of election results and to continue pushing for full electronic reforms in the Electoral Act.
He was accompanied on the visit by several ADC leaders and stakeholders, including former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and ex-senator Ben Obi.
Governor Makinde, who remained in private meetings after Abubakar left, declined to comment to journalists.
