Electricity supply restoration has begun across several electricity distribution companies following the collapse of Nigeria’s national power grid — the first recorded incident in 2026.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) confirmed the development in a notice issued on Friday, stating that power supply from the national grid had started to return.
According to the DisCo, bulk electricity supply is being progressively restored across its network as of the time of filing this report.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) explained that the grid collapse was caused by the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, alongside the disconnection of some grid-connected generation units. These events, NISO said, collectively triggered the system failure.
Data released by NISO showed that as of 6:21 pm on Friday, electricity allocation to distribution companies stood at 235 megawatts, indicating gradual recovery.
In a further update, NISO disclosed that power had been restored to Abuja, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha, Sakete, Jebba, Kainji, Shiroro, and parts of Lagos, while restoration efforts were ongoing in other parts of the country.
Earlier, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed that a system disturbance occurred around 12:40 pm on Friday, January 23, 2026, after the national grid recorded zero power allocation to all DisCos.
The grid collapse plunged Africa’s most populous nation into total darkness, disrupting businesses and daily activities nationwide.
Authorities have assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to fully stabilise the grid and restore electricity supply across the country.
